As the Iran-Israel war intensifies, global powers appear increasingly divided over the conflict. The United States is openly supporting Israel and is reportedly preparing for possible military action against Iran. On the other hand, Russia—backing Iran—has openly warned the U.S. that any direct intervention will have serious consequences. Now, another major power, China, has also voiced its support for Iran and urged Israel to cease fire immediately.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has stated unequivocally that war is not the right way to resolve disputes. Breaking its silence on the five-day-old conflict, China expressed deep concern over the escalating situation, emphasising that war should never be the solution to international issues. Meanwhile, Russia has reiterated its warning to the U.S., cautioning that providing military aid to Israel in its fight against Iran would be extremely dangerous.
President Xi’s statement came during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During their hour-long conversation, both leaders discussed the worsening situation in the Middle East and jointly called for an immediate ceasefire—especially by Israel—to restore peace and stability in the region.
Kremlin foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov stated, *"President Putin and Xi Jinping also agreed to instruct their respective agencies to share intelligence related to Iran." Last week, Israel launched ‘Operation Rising Lion’, targeting Iran's nuclear, missile, and military infrastructure. In response, Iran retaliated with its own attacks on Israel.
On Wednesday, Russia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) jointly appealed for an immediate end to hostilities between Israel and Iran. Both countries emphasised the need to step up political and diplomatic efforts to address Tehran’s nuclear issue. According to the Kremlin, President Putin discussed the matter in a phone call with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
In the midst of the escalating war, several countries have taken clear sides based on their strategic interests and ideologies. The United States, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Canada, the UK, the UAE, and Jordan have openly backed Israel and criticised Iran's nuclear ambitions. Conversely, Russia, China, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt are voicing their support for Iran.
India, however, has maintained a neutral stance. Rather than siding with either party, New Delhi has called for peace and urged both sides to resolve their disputes through dialogue.
